MATTHEW APEL

Matthew E. Apel, MD completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Arizona. He then joined the Division of General Surgery/Section of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at The University of Arizona as a Clinical Fellow. During his fellowship, he further developed his skills in advanced bariatric surgery procedures. He is also certified in using the robotic da Vinci Surgical System as a Console Surgeon. Dr. Matt’s passion for bariatric surgery is rooted in his desire to help patients’ not only improve, or resolve, many of their medical conditions, but also boost their self-esteem, quality of life, and overall happiness. He feels that it is an honor and a privilege to be part of each patient’s journey to a new, happier you! He regularly attends meetings and conferences to make sure he provides you with state-of-the-art quality and care. At home, he is further blessed with a beautiful family: his wife, Christine, two kids, Eliana and Elijah, and two dogs, Charlie and Blue.

TOM UMBACH

Bariatrics is Dr. Tom’s passion! He was drawn to bariatrics because of the potential it had in significantly improving or altogether eliminating his patients’ diabetes. His passion grew from there: “I love it when, six months later, I’m seeing people back in the office… and they’ve lost 60, 80, maybe even 100 pounds and are no longer taking their diabetic medications or they’ve gotten rid of their sleep apnea machine and they’ve gotten rid of their high blood pressure medications. And they’re out there hiking, traveling, or doing whatever and they’ve really ‘blossomed’ as people.” Over the last 15 years of specialized experience, he has helped hundreds of patients suffering from not only diabetes, but everything from knee pain and depression to sleep apnea and heart trouble. As an innovative surgeon, he often finds new, better, and more efficient tools and practices that allow him to operate more safely, comfortably, effectively, and cost-effectively.
